ESL School

esl-schoolThere are many types of ESL schools.  One choice we here at Uceda English have is our school in Hackensack, N.J.  many of our schools are regular and amazing in the daytime, and offer other types of courses at night.  The schools tend to be busier at night, though, since many people come from work.

This amazing ESL school is run very efficiently.  There are a large number of classes of ESL offered.  The students are tested, and then their score determines which level they will be placed in.  Once they are placed, however, they may ask to move to another level, either up or down.  The levels range from zero to 5.  One thing that complicates everything is that the students literally come from all over the globe, and are mixed together class by class.

The students in the zero level work on learning vocabulary, and they learn at a very fundamental level.  Some students know no English at all.  To teach them, the teacher must be very physical and demonstrate many of the words to them.  You can hear this class doing their many activities as you pass in the hallways.  It’s very amusing.

The teacher for Level 1 this year taught Level 5 last year.  She didn’t know what she would have this year, so it was with trepidation that she went to teach the class.  And that’s when she found out that it was a lot of fun to work with the students.  Now she wouldn’t trade places with anyone!

The students in Levels 3 and 4 work at an intermediate level.  They watch DVDs, put words together to make large charts, and have a very busy and interesting time.

The students in Level 5 are in the top group.  These students do much more reading and discussing in class.

Lastly, there is an ESL/GED Guidance Counselor who helps the students when it comes to looking for jobs, and all everything that this entails.
